I GIMP-terminologi är ett filter en insticksmodul som ändrar utseendet för en bild, i de flesta fall bara bildens aktiva lager. Alla objekt i denna meny uppfyller dock inte denna definition, ordet ”filter” används ofta felaktigt för att betyda alla insticksmoduler, oavsett vad de gör. Vissa objekt i denna meny ändrar mycket riktigt inte bilder över huvud taget.

With the exception of the topmost items of the Filters menu, all of the entries are provided by plug-ins. Each plug-in decides for itself where it would like its menu entry to be placed. Therefore, the appearance of this menu can be completely different for each user. In practice, though, the appearance does not vary very much, because most plug-ins come with GIMP when it is installed, and of course they are always in the same places in the menu.

Insticksmoduler är inte begränsade till menyn Filter: en insticksmodul kan placera objekt i alla menyer. En del av GIMPs grundläggande funktioner implementeras mycket riktigt av filter (exempelvis Halvutplattning i Lager-menyn). Men menyn Filter är standardplatsen för en insticksmodul att placera sina menyobjekt.
